Addis Ababa, April 3, 2021 (Walta) – President Sahle-Work Zewde said that the development of the water resources of the Abay River is a matter of survival for Ethiopia and called for cooperation with neighboring countries for fair and reasonable utilization.
Speaking yesterday on the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the president said that Ethiopia has been denied the right to develop projects in the basin, which has great potential for its national wealth, due to internal and external challenges.
The Abay River contributes to two-thirds of Ethiopia’s surface water resources, Sahle-Work noted, emphasizing that “the development of this basin is a matter of survival for Ethiopia.”
According to ENA, the president expressed her belief that developments in the basin will eradicate poverty from Ethiopia and benefit downstream countries.
Therefore, he asked neighboring countries to cooperate for a fair and reasonable use of the resource.
The president noted that Ethiopia is preparing to proceed with the filling of the second phase of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
