Now that the PlayStation 5 is in the hands of consumers and critics around the world, those who have gotten their hands on the console are happy with its performance. But nevertheless, Gamers Nexus A deeper look at the console has raised some concerns about the PS5’s cooling capabilities.
The plug recently ran several tests on the PS5 and opened the console to check thermals, power consumption, and noise. Their findings are alarming, to say the least.
I highly recommend watching the full video, as there is a lot of important information, but my own concerns involve how long it takes for the console to cool down once it is no longer in use, and it just warms up the memory and VRMs. That’s a lot of heat and it could pose some issues when launching more graphically demanding titles.
A couple of points to remove from the video:
- Memory cooling could be better; this is a great concern
- PlayStation 5 runs cooler with both side panels removed
- Power consumption is exceptional
- The noise is not noticeable
- The fan could possibly run at higher RPM to improve cooling at the cost of more noise
Memory temperatures are a big concern for anyone with a PS5, and there is a possibility of artifacts. This is not just a rumor, as we have already seen many examples reported on PS5 social media exhibiting this trend.

Interestingly, before the launch of the PlayStation 5, there were rumors that Sony had a problem cooling the console. While this was never tested and Sony does not respond to rumors, the recent test results are alarming.
I’m sure Sony knows the results that Gamers Nexus has brought to light and performed many tests on his own. I doubt the company will release a long-awaited console without doing due diligence to make sure the console or its components won’t fail due to heat issues, but you may need to re-examine the design.
As a PlayStation 5 owner, I can attest that even after many hours of Demon’s Souls, the console has remained cool to the touch and I have not noticed any loud noises. It has been immensely quieter than my experience with the PlayStation 4 Pro, a console that sounded like a jet taking off every time I fired up a demanding game.
How this develops over time is anyone’s guess. For now, I have not heard of any PlayStation 5 having problems due to overheating issues. But we’re still in the early stages of the console’s life, and these warming concerns could become a problem later on. Memory heating is concerning and is a sign that Sony has work to do with regard to cooling the console. I’m sure the updated versions of the PS5 will include some kind of fix that changes this.
Outside of what Gamers Nexus Noted, it’s worth mentioning that PS5 owners can help reduce heating issues by playing their console in a place where airflow is not restricted. Like a computer, the PS5 needs to breathe, so placing the console in a place where the hot air has nowhere to go is not a good idea; you run the risk of overheating the unit.
