Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell want to be as honest as possible about their relationship.

While appearing in Sunday today with Willie Geist, Shepard, 46, spoke about why he and Bell, 40, struggle to be frank about their ups and downs.

“We don’t want anyone to think that we met and it has been easy because if that is the expectation of a relationship and certainly a marriage, it is a bad expectation,” he said.

The couple, who married in 2013, share two children, daughters Lincoln, 7, and Delta, 6.

Shepard went on to joke that to give Bell a little more time alone, he could tell Bell that his interview with Geist “lasted another half hour.”

“If Kristen asks, I’ll say we went long,” Geist added with a smile.

Bell, who has been spending more time with Shepard at home than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic, recently opened up to PEOPLE about the work they did to keep their marriage strong.

“Dax and I, when we started this pandemic, we were at a point in our marriage where we definitely needed a bit of therapy,” shared the actress.

“Every two years, we think, ‘We’re being very antagonistic to each other,’ and we don’t want that,” he added. “We go back to therapy and find out what I’m not doing that is better for you and what you’re not doing that is better for me, and how we can best meet this team goal. It has been incredibly helpful.”

Bell has also credited her husband for encouraging her to talk about her struggles with anxiety and depression.

“My husband said, yeah, talk about it. And I realized that he had been presenting this as a bubbly individual, and it just wasn’t the whole story. He didn’t have the dimension,” he said in a December episode. from The backstory podcast.

“I want to be the person who speaks honestly and says: ‘I understand what I present to you, it is not always like that,'” he said. Good place added star. “So if you feel that too, you should know that I’m here with you.”
