Dave Kitson has invited Raheem Sterling to discuss any problems the Manchester City striker has about his attempt to lead the players’ union.
The former Reading and Stoke City striker stepped forward to force change in the Professional Footballers Association this week with a public letter to Chief Executive Gordon Taylor in which he asked 101 questions to the organization.
But there have been rumors from some quarters that his attempt to take control could be derailed due to a dispute over the comments he made after England star Sterling had been racially abused during a game in Chelsea two years ago.
Kitson, 40, has made things clear, asking people to judge after hearing their side of the story.
He said: “The day after I retired, I was kicking my heels, and I saw that there was a convention at a hotel near my home. The hotel has been converted from a stately home and hosted a Ferrari convention.

“I went there with my son to take a look and I said,‘ Take a picture, it will be fun. ” Then he snapped. I am standing outside the hotel, between two Ferrari.
“Without thinking, I published it in my Instagram account with the subtitle: ‘Bored the first day of my retirement. It was a bad attempt at ironic humor.
“People who know me will know that I have been through the mill financially. People who didn’t see it as an expression of a glamorous lifestyle that deserved defamation.
“The abuse I took was unreal. There were hundreds of responses. Most of them included the words “flash”, “ginger” and much worse.

“It really took me by surprise … anger and evil. I really didn’t think the world was that hard.
Two or three years later, I was speaking on TalkSport and asked to give my opinion after Raheem had been brutally abused while playing for Manchester City in Chelsea. It was horrible
“I couldn’t help but recall the episode when I suffered a backlash as a result of posting glamorous lifestyle photos online.
“I said that I had looked at Raheem’s social media and that at first it was about his cars and houses, I was pleased to see that he had changed it because there is a lot of jealousy and I knew what was happening.” It was like being at the end of unjustified abuse.
“I said I gave people a reason not to like him as a person. Not that he did something wrong with his social media account, but he did give certain people a platform to express their unsavory and misinformed opinions.
“But I am distressed that this has somehow turned into a suggestion that I condoned the surprising abuse Raheem suffered, or otherwise requested.” Could not be farther from the truth.
“Maybe I used awkward language and that’s why I apologize. But I have never tolerated and will never tolerate any form of racism.
“I admire Raheem for starting the fight and saying, ‘No, I’m not going to have this.’ And I agree with him. More needs to be done. And I’m prepared to do it.

“And if he, or someone, wants to discuss that matter with me, and what I intend to do, I’m more than happy to have that conversation and put his mind, and that of other players, to rest.”
He added: “I have faced racism on the field and seen children cry in the locker room afterwards due to racist abuse from the stands.”
“It is absolutely intolerable. And what is happening right now is not a deterrent. Is not working.
“So we have to come up with one. Hopefully, it’s something I’ll have a chance to talk to Raheem, and seek his help and knowledge, if he’s willing to discuss it.
