Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) has escaped from the front group on the last stage of Milano-Sanremo and has taken the victory of the Monument.
Although the Belgian is a specialist in classics, he was not one of the favorites for this race, but he beat all the odds. The rider was part of the group of favorites during the Poggio climb and attacked on the descent, while all the other favorites focused on each other.
Stuyven managed to carve a niche but was caught by Soren Kragh Andersen (Team DSM) and later by the group, he still had legs left to launch a final sprint that gave him the victory.
“I knew I had to try, all or nothing,” said the 2021 Milano-Sanremo winner. “I’d rather do this than go for the sprint and finish in fifth or tenth place, so I prefer to go all-in. Most of the Sometimes it’s nothing, sometimes it’s everything, and today was everything. It’s incredible. I don’t realize [what I’ve done] yet. I am incredibly happy.
“In the last kilometer I saw Soren coming, so I tried to recover a little before the chicane. That gave me 300 meters to recover a little and that was necessary. I was hoping it would get through, and it did. And then I started the sprint. There was nothing left on my legs, but it was enough. “
