The sorry state of Cyberpunk 2077 has already plagued developer CD Projekt Red in the wallet with Sony allowing returns of PS4 copies with no questions asked, but the financial damage could be about to get a bit more painful for the company.
On Christmas Eve, investor Andrew Trampe filed a lawsuit against CD Projekt Red seeking unspecified damages, arguing that the company made “false and / or misleading” statements about the game, at various points exaggerating how finished the game was. title and underestimating the volume of crazy.
The claim argues that the game “was virtually unplayable on current-generation Xbox or PlayStation systems due to a massive number of bugs” that led to the company suffering “reputational and pecuniary damage.”
Evidence for the claim is a series of quotes allegedly taken verbatim from developer announcements and investor calls. In a conference call in November, for example, the company is quoted as acknowledging the bugs but reportedly stated that “we think the level will be so low that players won’t see them.” The lawsuit also notes that CD Projekt Red labeled the game “full and playable” in January 2020, before delaying it multiple times.
A press release accompanying the Rosen Law Firm lawsuit requests that investors interested in joining the class action lawsuit contact the firm, which specializes in “global investor rights,” no later than February 22, 2021.
It’s still what can only be described as a “shaky” first month for Cyberpunk 2077. While the experience differs drastically depending on which version you’re playing (the PC edition is comparatively low in bugs, while last-gen versions play in Next-Gen Hardware Reduces Console Version Performance Issues), the company has acknowledged that there is more work to be done, with major patches promised in the coming months.
The first one, version 1.06, arrived a few days ago and should guarantee “better memory management and stability, resulting in fewer crashes” on your console. It also includes a fix for a nasty PC bug where exceeding 8MB of save files would lose all progress, although it doesn’t rescue saved games that were no longer playable, sadly.
Not all mistakes are as groundbreaking as that, of course. Some are just entertaining.
