Crunchyroll and Adult Swim Team for SEGA’s Shenmue anime adaptation

Crunchyroll has announced that it will be partnering with Adult Swim for an anime series based on SEGA’s beloved video game franchise. Shenmue.

“First Shenmue The video game was released over twenty years ago and we are very excited to be working with Adult Swim again to bring this franchise to life through anime, “said Sarah Victor, Crunchyroll’s head of development. “We look forward to showing our fans more of this action-packed adventure series as we progress through production.”

“The world of Shenmue is fascinating and unique, and we are so excited to partner with Yu Suzuki to bring his epic creation to anime, and make an incredible martial arts epic! “said Jason DeMarco, svp / on-air creative director for Adult Swim.

The official logline for the 13-episode series reads:

Shenmue follows Ryo Hazuki’s journey. After witnessing his father’s murder at the family dojo, Ryo dedicates his life to finding the man responsible, a mission that takes him from the streets of Yokosuka, Japan, to the sprawling metropolis of Hong Kong, and beyond. You will soon learn that greater mystical forces are at play as you train to become the ultimate martial artist in your quest for revenge.

Shenmue is bieng directed by Sakurai Chikara (One punch man, Naruto), with animation by Telecom Animation Film. The series will air worldwide outside of Japan and mainland China on Crunchyroll and will air on Adult Swim’s Toonami in the United States.
