A woman who became the first person in the world to receive the Pfizer vaccine this month after its clinical approval received her second dose.
Margaret Keenan received the follow-up injection at Coventry University Hospital on Tuesday, three weeks after making history with the first hit.
The 91-year-old, who celebrated a birthday between punctures, received an injection on December 8 and described it as a “whirlwind” day. NHS England said at the time that it would have a “booster jab” 21 days later “to make sure it had the best chance of being protected against the virus.”
Keenan, who has lived in Coventry for more than 60 years but is originally from Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, was now recovering well after her second hit, the NHS University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire trust said.
Professor Andy Hardy, Executive Director of the Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome Margaret Keenan to Coventry University Hospital today to safely receive the second dose of the vaccine, after she became the first person in the world to receive the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.
“Our hardworking staff who have been involved in the vaccination program have stayed in contact with Margaret’s family since that day and we are delighted that Margaret has continued to recover well at home.
“It is important for everyone to come forward for the vaccine when invited to do so and, like other hospitals and GP surgeries across the country, we will be following the latest expert advice and testing to invite people to get vaccinated at that time. they need it “.
The most recent figures released by the Department of Health and Welfare last week showed that between 8 December and 20 December 616,933 people in the UK were hit first. But speaking on Christmas Eve, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that nearly 800,000 people had received their first dose of the vaccine in two stages.
Since the initial hits were administered in hospitals, the deployment has expanded to sites run by GPs and nursing homes.
A Welsh government spokesman said that people in Wales would start receiving their second dose of the vaccine from 5 January.
