The heads of the main UN humanitarian agencies have launched an urgent appeal to support the global aid centers that are needed to help those most exposed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The $ 350 million request will allow for a rapid increase in supplies and workers, amid canceled flights and disrupted supply routes, which have been disproportionately affected by the virus.
A key objective of the appeal is to support transportation aid centers run by the World Food Program worldwide.
It will also allow the agency to charter vessels and provide cargo aircraft, health workers, and other essential personnel.
And it will also cover medical evacuation services for front-line workers and infrastructure and construction of treatment centers.
Without these facilities used by the humanitarian community, “the global response could stop,” warned the heads of UN agencies.
More than half a trillion dollars have been found since UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged donors to support a $ 2 trillion Global Humanitarian Response Plan on March 25.
