COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia exceed 124,000

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) – Ethiopia’s Health Ministry reported 408 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours on Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 124,264 in the country.

The ministry said the number of COVID-19-related deaths in the country reached 1,923 as of Thursday night, including five new COVID-19-related deaths reported during the last 24-hour period.

The ministry further said that some 112,096 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had recovered so far, including 226 in the last 24-hour period.

He also said that around 10,243 of the total reported COVID-19 cases are active cases, of which 234 of the patients are said to be in severe condition.

According to the ministry, the new cases were discovered out of 5,547 COVID-19 medical tests that were conducted in the East African country over the past 24 hours.

Ethiopia has conducted 1,800,236 medical tests for COVID-19 so far, the ministry noted.

Ethiopia, the second most populous nation in Africa with approximately 107 million people, has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the East African region.

Ethiopia is the fifth country most affected by COVID-19 on the African continent, after South Africa, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia. Final product
