The total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases across the African continent reached 1,577,644 as of Monday, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) said.
The Africa CDC, a specialized health care agency of the African Union (AU) Commission, said in a statement that the death toll due to pandemic-related illnesses reached 38,396 as of Monday afternoon.
Africa’s CDC said the number of people who have recovered from the infectious virus across the continent has reached 1,304,622 so far.
Amid the uneven impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic on African countries, the African CDC said that the African countries most affected by the disease in terms of number of positive cases include South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Nigeria.
The Southern Africa region is the region most affected by COVID-19 both in terms of the number of confirmed positive cases and the number of deaths.
The North Africa region is the second African region most affected by COVID-19.
According to figures from the continental disease control and prevention agency, six African countries account for approximately 90 percent of the new COVID-19 cases reported since last week, in which Morocco reported 29 percent of the new cases, South Africa 20 percent. Tunisia accounts for 20 percent, Ethiopia for 10 percent, Libya for 8 percent and Kenya for 2 percent.
The countries that reported the highest incidence of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population during the past seven days in Africa also include Cape Verde, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa and Eswatini, it was noted.
South Africa currently has the highest number of COVID-19 cases, reaching 692,471. The country also has the highest number of deaths related to COVID-19, with 17,780.
According to the Africa CDC, of the 55 AU members reporting epidemiological data for COVID-19, 14 countries report fatality rates higher than the global fatality rate of 2.9 percent.
These countries include Chad, Sudan, Liberia, Niger, Egypt, Mali, Algeria, Angola, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Malawi.
The average continental death rate is currently around 2.4 percent.
Total COVID-19 cases on the continent make up about 4.3 percent of the global count, according to the Africa CDC.
