McGregor last January: we have talks with Pacquiao

Conor McGregor claims that he will return to the boxing ring against Manny Pacquiao.

The UFC superstar posted a series of tweets Friday night explaining his inactivity since January and saying that his next fight will be with Pacquiao.

“I’m going to box Manny Pacquiao in the Middle East,” he said after explaining how the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus have kept him out of the UFC octagon.

McGregor made his professional boxing debut in 2017, but lost a profitable fight to Floyd Mayweather, who later retired with an undefeated 50-0 record.

But the Irishman has constantly scoffed at a second boxing match: In preparation for his most recent UFC win, last January, he mentioned Pacquiao.

“The Manny Pacquiao talks have been ongoing,” he said at the time.

“One of my aspirations now is to win a world boxing title. I think it would be a phenomenal feather in the cap and something that I hope to achieve in the future. And something that I will achieve.”

He said at the time about Mayweather: “I would love that rematch. I thought so, from what was in front of me, great.

“I thought that with a few small adjustments I would have made it even better. So I feel like now I could take that win.”

After McGregor defeated Donald Cerrone at their UFC meeting, he quickly returned to talking about boxing.

“It’s me and Manny,” he joked when his victory was greeted by a tweet from Pacquiao.

And he said of Mayweather: “He’s far from retired. That rematch will happen at some point.”

UFC President Dana White added: “We are doing something with Floyd. Floyd is in our plans and we are in Floyd’s plans this year. We will end up doing something.”

Pacquiao, 41, is the current WBA welterweight champion and has won world titles in eight divisions.

He lost the richest fight of all time to Mayweather in 2015.
