Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa approach 2.88 million – Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, Jan.6 (Xinhua) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent reached 2,879,193 as of Wednesday, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa) said.

The continental agency said in a statement that the death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic reached 68,755 as of Wednesday.

Africa’s CDC, a specialized health care agency of the African Union (AU) Commission, also said that a total of 2,378,090 people infected with COVID-19 had recovered from the infectious virus across the continent.

The most affected African countries in terms of the number of positive cases include South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Ethiopia, respectively, the CDC figures for Africa showed.

South Africa has the highest number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, with 1,127,759. The country also has the highest deaths caused by COVID-19 at 30,524, according to the Africa CDC.

Morocco comes next with 445,439 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 7,581 deaths, followed by Tunisia with 147,061 confirmed cases and 4,934 COVID-19 related deaths. Final product
