ADEN, Yemen, Nov.28 (Xinhua) – Intense armed clashes broke out between government forces and Southern Transitional Council (STC) military units in southern Yemen’s Abyan province early Saturday, it said. a security official to Xinhua.

“The fighting started between government forces and STC military units during the night and continued throughout the day amid heavy artillery barrage in Abyan,” the local security source said on condition of anonymity.

He said hours of fighting left nearly 10 members of the STC military units dead, including four senior officers.

Meanwhile, another government forces official confirmed that six of his soldiers were killed by the STC bombing in Abyan.

Local residents said the two sides are still fighting artillery, mortar and machine gun fire in areas east of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan.

Last month, the political representatives of the two warring factions again failed to declare a new power-sharing government after a series of reconciliation meetings in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh.

In 2019, Saudi Arabia persuaded the STC and the Yemeni government to hold reconciliation talks, successfully reaching an agreement to form a new technocratic cabinet of no more than 24 ministers.

But numerous obstacles have stood in the way of the agreement’s implementation, which excluded the Houthi rebels who still control the capital, Sanaa, and other northern provinces of the war-torn Arab country.

The impoverished Arab country has been embroiled in civil war since late 2014, when the Houthis invaded much of the country and seized all northern regions, including Sanaa. Final product
