Clarification: Gadamaytu, Undufo and Adaytu are within Afar, says regional state in letter

Addis Ababa November 02/2020 – In a letter addressed to Addis Standard and CCd to the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority, the regional state of Afar has requested the retraction of a published news Addis Standard on October 29 regarding the ownership of three kebelles mentioned in the news.

Citing a May 2019 statement from the Somali region issued after an extraordinary meeting of the regional state cabinet and its decision to unilaterally withdraw from a 2014 agreement to hand over the cities of Garba-Issa, Undufo and Adaytu to the regional state of Afar, Addis Standardd published that the three Kebelles were previously administered by the Somali region.

However, a letter from the Afar state regional communication affairs office sent to Addis Standard said the three kebelles: Gadamaytu, Undufo and Adaytu were located within the Afar region, not on the border with the Somali region, and they have always been part of the Afar regional state.

Note that Addis Standard News citing the May 2019 Somali region cabinet statement indicated that one of the three names is Garba-Issa, which is replaced by Gadamaytu in the Afar region statement. The letter also stated that the names should be Gadamaytu, Undufo, and Adaytu.

The editor would like to apologize for the error in this story, which simply cites a decision by the Somalia regional state cabinet, and is not intended to cause confusion. AS
