The cholera outbreak killed 11 people in southern Ethiopia, in the South Omo area, Dasenech district.

So far, more than 931 cholera cases and 11 deaths have been reported in the Dasenech area, according to the state broadcaster – ETV. People affected by the waterborne disease live around Lake Turkana, on the border with Kenya. It is indicated that people are now receiving medical treatment. Currently, the number of new cases is declining because health workers in the area are now tracking and treating people with cholera, according to Mr. Tensay Hailu, Coordinator of the Bobowa Health Center in Dasenech.

It is indicated that up to 70 daily cholera cases were reported in the Dasenech area. But now the new confirmed daily cases have been reduced to 15. The decrease in new cases is attributed to health workers in the area who are rapidly tracking and disinfecting people affected by the disease.

Excluding Gambella and Benshangul Gumz, all regions of Ethiopia have reported a total of more than 7,000 cholera cases and around 100 deaths the same period last year, according to Mr. Aschalew Abayneh, Deputy Director of the Institute of Public Health of Ethiopia. He said the government has participated in prevention activities to contain that outbreak, which often occurs during Ethiopia’s rainy season.
