Chelsea vs Southampton player ratings: Mason Mount wears Blues while Kurt Zouma is embarrassed upon return

Chelsea dominated the first half but struggled to create something clear, Marcos Alonso’s volley sent his only real chance off the far post. Southampton had barely set foot in the visiting half until Nathan Redmond was allowed to trade passes with former Chelsea player Oriol Romeu before feeding Takumi Minamino through a gaping hole in the Blues’ last three. Minamino passed out, leaving Edouard Mendy and Cesar Azpilicueta flat on the grass before finishing.

Kurt Zouma called Alex McCarthy into action with a header off the near post, but the Blues offered shortly before the break.

Callum Hudson-Odoi replaced Tammy Abraham for the second half and Chelsea came out at full blast. The visitors were stationed in the Southampton area before Danny Ings foolishly attacked Mason Mount for a clear penalty. With Jorginho on the bench, Mount stepped forward and scored his second goal in three league games.

This is how Jack Rosser called the Blues …

He had very little to do, but the only shot he really faced was Chelsea No1 left on his butt by Minamino.

He kept Danny Ings quiet, but could have done better to cover Southampton’s goal.

First start in the Premier League since the beginning of January and he seemed to follow Rudiger’s run in place of Minamino for the goal.

Performance sufficiently assured by the German, he was rarely seen in back problems.

I was able to impress and it was encouraging moving forward, crossing could have been better and losing an absolute babysitter later.

Start of First League with Tuchel. One of the best players on the field, but the forwards could have been sharper.

Sharp on the ball in the first half, but it became very, very wasteful in the second. Fortunately, his mistakes were not punished.

He squandered so many good positions in the first half and while Southampton rarely tested Chelsea, they didn’t offer much on defense.

Chelsea’s brightest sparkle everywhere. He picked up the pace when he needed it in the first half and stepped forward to convert the penalty in the second.

He got into good positions and caused problems for the Southampton defense, but wasted too much in the final third.

He didn’t give the Southampton baseline much to think about, but those around him deprived him of service.

He caused some problems for Southampton on the right, but clearly did not please Tuchel. The substitute was substituted.
