Chelsea stars ‘accept 10 percent pay cut after WhatsApp chat showdown’

The Chelsea players agreed to take a 10 percent pay cut to ease the club’s financial concerns during the coronavirus crisis.

Blues captain César Azpilicueta was at the center of the confrontational discussions between the stars on WhatsApp, where they reached the agreement.

Azpilicueta then texted on behalf of the group to confirm the cut, saving Chelsea £ 10 million over its four-month duration.

All Chelsea players were quick to respond to Azpilicueta’s initial message proposing the cut, which runs from summer to September, and very receptive to the decision.

This is because manager Frank Lampard volunteered to have 25 percent of his salary docked in the future to aid the effort – a savings of £ 1.25 million on his £ 5 million deal per year.

The Sun reports that the Chelsea stars were not interested in arranging clauses regarding recovering money through things like achieving Champions League qualifications.

Similar stipulations have delayed crucial conversations between players and clubs at Arsenal.

Negotiations between Chelsea’s bosses and the players are believed to have been more hospitable.

That was greatly helped by director Marina Granovskaia’s decision to take a 25 percent pay cut as well, in line with Lampard’s.

Furthermore, the players understood the need to save after Chelsea published a financial loss of £ 96 million in their latest reports.

However, as with concerns at Arsenal, Chelsea players want assurances that the club will not use the savings to finance newcomers to the transfer market.

A source told The Sun: “Players fully understand the need to save cash and are buying.

“But with every arrangement like this, they want to make sure that their money will be used directly to help the club.

“Let’s say it wouldn’t be very welcome if players cut wages to help pay the bills, then Chelsea came out and splashed a fortune on new players when the next transfer window opens.”
