Apple is rumored to be planning to release a rugged version of the Apple Watch, but before it does, that segment is gradually getting a lot of entrants. Best known for its G-Shock series of rugged watches, Casio released the first G-Shock smartwatch and it is powered by Google’s Android WearOS. The Casio G-Squad Pro GSW-H1000 smartwatch is also the first G-Shock watch to feature a color screen.
The Casio GSW-H1000 retains the design language of G-Shock watches. It is also designed to be strong and durable with a titanium backing. The body is also made of durable materials that provide shock and water resistance up to a depth of 200 meters.
The watch is equipped with a 1.2-inch dual-layer display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. The display combines an always-on monochrome LCD screen that always shows the time, with a color LCD panel that can display notifications, maps, sensor data, and other information.
Furthermore, the GSW-H1000 comes equipped with various sensors, such as built-in GPS, altitude, barometric pressure, compass heading sensor, optical heart rate sensor, and others.
On the software side, there’s an onboard Casio app that supports 24 indoor workout options and 15 activities including running, cycling, and swimming, as well as other extreme sports like surfing and snowboarding. There are other features enabled by WearOS as well, such as smartphone notifications, access to the Google Assistant, and various apps.
Battery life is not really good on the Casio GSW-1000. A full charge can take only 1.5 days with the color screen. However, there is a multi-clock mode that extends the battery to a month, but you will have to sacrifice the color screen.
The Casio G-Squad Pro GSW-H1000 is priced at $ 699 in the US or £ 599 in the UK. The smartwatch will be available in red, black and blue colors and will start shipping in mid-May.
