On October 23, Microsoft-owned Github took advantage of an alleged DMCA removal to remove 18 projects from the code hosting portal. According to sources, the removal was due to a request submitted by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The recent Github move has made the crypto community distrustful of the platform and some advocates are fearful that the code bases of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin could be wiped out by government forces.
This week, the RIAA got Microsoft-owned Github to remove several projects from the code hosting portal. The deleted code repositories come from a project called the Youtube-dl protocol. The software is a Python library that allows people to download source files from the YouTube video streaming platform.
Before the removal, the Python Youtube-dl library had over 72,000 stars on the repository platform. Github posted the reasons behind the removal of the DMCA, but some people questioned whether it was real or not. For example, Chief Legal Officer John Bergmayer stated that “this is not really a DMCA request.”
“I don’t see any claim that Youtube-dl is infringing work. Rather, the claim is that it is illegal per se ”, Bergmayer wrote on Twitter. In addition to Bergmayer’s statements, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) also tweeted about Github’s compliance with the RIAA.
“Youtube-dl is a legitimate tool with a world of legal uses”, detailed the EFF. “Demanding its removal from Github is a disappointing and counterproductive decision by the RIAA.”
Github’s move has caused concern among many cryptocurrency advocates, as various bitcoin advocates have been discussing the situation. On October 24, Sideshift.ai founder Andreas Brekken tweeted: “The threat is real”, after sharing a tweet that Pierre Rochard wrote to his followers on September 9, 2020.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if central banks pressure Github to remove the bitcoin / bitcoin repository,” Rochard said. exclaimed more than a month and a half ago. “Development work would continue, but it would be much slower and more decentralized,” he added.
Of course, after Youtube-dl was removed by Github, several other crypto advocates discussed the possibilities of crypto repositories being removed and what kinds of alternatives are available. Software developer Chris Troutner responded to Brekken’s threat tweet and explained how you back up your code.

“It’s a shame that an open source tool that doesn’t use proprietary code gets a DMCA notice” tweeted another individual. “The code is not free if it is on Github.” Some other encryption users He suggested that Filecoin developers should “focus on building a decentralized github.” “Open source code is crucial and the text is easy to compress and does not consume storage,” he added.
However, the removal of Youtube-dl DMCA is not everyone’s concern and follows the recent Arctic permafrost project that Github recently participated in. According to Github, the Bitcoin base code will be stored for 1000 years while archivists recorded the blockchain network code on reels of film and locked the base code in a steel capsule.
It is also important to note that Git is a form of distribution and not a centralized protocol. Github is a centralized protocol owned by Microsoft, but the bitcoin / bitcoin repository can be duplicated at any time.
