Bungie will give the mountaintop grenade launcher some long-overdue balance changes in an upcoming Destiny 2 sandbox update.
The dmg04 community manager mocked the changes in a cheep the present day. Above extensive updates to Strikes, Crucible and Gambit, a new blog post from Bungie suggested that a big sandbox update is planned for October. According to dmg, this update includes changes to Mountaintop that will “balance” but “not kill” the weapon.
Mountaintop has been extremely popular in all game modes since it was first released in season 5 as a maximum weapon, and it has only become more prevalent in recent seasons now that the quest to obtain it is considerably easier. . Its unique buff offers high damage and pinpoint accuracy, so it has never left the meta for PvE or PvP. Many solo dungeon strategies rely on their downright obscene damage output, and countering it in PvP is extremely difficult.
Despite its obvious strengths and unmatched ease of use, Mountaintop has largely escaped balance patches. Once again, it came out in season 5, and it’s still used everywhere by players at the end of season 11. It’s hard to think of another weapon that is so strong, popular, and also durable. For comparison, the Recluse, another extremely powerful Crucible pinnacle weapon, was nerfed after a few seasons, and both it and Mountaintop are widely recognized for the removal of pinnacle weapons as a reward. Simply put, if Bungie kept creating these monsters, the balance of the game would be irretrievably destroyed.
After such a long and tyrannical reign, it will be interesting to see how Bungie weakens Mountaintop. Even as a staunch opponent of the weapon, I would hate to see him totally limp, but there is no question that he is, appropriately, overdone as he is.
Destiny 2 Nightfall Double Rewards come next week.
