Samsung has undoubtedly been leading the folding race and that too by a huge margin. The South Korean company’s foldable phones are already in their second generation compared to some other brands that are not yet determined to add a foldable device to their lineup.
That said, when you think it’s time for folding phones to get cheaper and more affordable, all eyes are on Samsung to democratize phones with flexible screens. The South Korean tech giant has been rumored for some time to be looking for an affordable variant of the Galaxy Z Flip phone and now reports suggest that the Z Flip 3 could come with a mid-segment chipset.
The latest report suggests that the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip smartphone could be the cheapest foldable phone yet. And to keep the new phone on “budget”, it is expected to come with some compromises like a mid-segment chipset and the absence of 5G connectivity.
The omission of 5G connectivity may bode well for price-sensitive markets like India and others, where 5G is still a distant dream and people still want to experience a state-of-the-art phone but are not happy to pay more.
The report talks about the presence of a Galaxy Z Flip variant with a model number SM-F720F hinting at an international variant of the Z Flip 3 without 5G connectivity. This also means that there could be another version of the Z Flip with 5G connectivity and obviously at a higher price aimed at a wider rollout.
Samsung’s Cheapest Foldable Phone Release Date
While rumors are raging, the affordable Z Flip may not launch anytime soon. As of now, the South Korean company is focused on introducing the Galaxy S21 line in January and the cheapest foldable is unlikely to be introduced. A cheaper foldable is sure to take all the shine off the Galaxy S21 launch and Samsung can hardly afford it given the below-average sales numbers for the Note 20 line.
So you can expect Samsung to look for a new lunch date to accommodate its Fold and Flip lineup and this date could be equally spaced between Samsung’s top two launch events of the year, that is, around May or June next. year. Even some rumors in the past have hinted at the May release.
