Bruce Springsteen has given a rare in-depth interview prior to the release of his new album Letter To You.
Bruce’s 20th studio album, released Friday, October 23, sees him reunite with The E Street Band in six years since 2014’s High Hopes. Speaking to Zane Lowe for Apple Music, The Boss explained that it was about time that I brought the band back together, and the result was something they had never done before.
“I knew I wanted to do a band project,” Bruce told Zane. “It’s been a long time since I put the band together and let them play in the studio. So it’s all just the moment and what happens and where you are in different places in your life and everything comes and it’s time.

“It was a great project for us, because I don’t think we ever played together live in the studio and then we kept everything we did in the full take, all the singing, all the playing. It’s The E Street Band really completely in. live. We’ve played live in the studio before, but we never kept everything, we always came back and doubled a voice or doubled, we played other things. It was a great experience for the guys and it was a testament to how well the band has become and how it keeps getting better over the years. “
Described as a “milestone launch” and “one of the best achievements of Bruce Springsteen’s career “by critics, Letter To You for Bruce dates back to the style heard on his third studio album Born To Run. Three of the album’s tracks (If I Was the Priest , Janey Needs a Shooter, and Song for Orphans) go back even earlier, revived for 2020 than it was supposed to be on their 1973 debut album.
“I wanted to go back to a probably closer style, you should maybe go back to Born To Run”, he says, “where I gave Roy [Bittan] free reign at the piano and the arrangements were … the songs fit that kind of arrangement. So it was a beautiful modern revision of that style. It’s very painful not being able to go out to play right now, because this is material that will play amazingly on stage. “

And while Letter To You is a nod to Born To Run in some way, Bruce is not one to chase after the success of his previous work and replicate themes. Letter To You is a whole new account of accepting the aging process and being grateful for what you have in the present moment.
“The guys you see that ended up trying, okay, the next record has to be bigger or … it’s not the healthiest way to go,” Bruce explained. “You better follow your muse. It’s a losing game every time you step into that particular focus.”
