Embracer also picks up Aspyr in the latest wave of spending.
Borderlands developer Gearbox has become the latest studio to be bought by Embracer, the huge umbrella company that in turn owns THQ Nordic, Koch Media, and Saber Interactive.
Gearbox owns the rights to the Borderlands franchise, so expect more of that. The studio also owns Brothers in Arms and Homeworld.
The $ 363 million deal includes six-year performance targets for additional compensation, up to a total of $ 1.3 billion. Hey, I wonder if the next six years will include a Borderlands 4 and 5.
Gearbox’s current 550 employees will be retained and controversial CEO Randy Pitchford will continue to lead the study.
The deal likely means Embracer will handle all Borderlands projects going forward. 2K, which has published the franchise so far, closed its Australian studio that made the spinoff Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in 2015.
In other Embracer news, the group also announced a $ 100 million deal to buy Aspyr Media, the American developer that has made a name for itself by working on the portability of major franchises like Borderlands and Star Wars to new platforms. We will watch your career with great interest!
To round out Embracer’s news today, the group announced a $ 640 million deal to merge with mobile publisher Easybrain.
