Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War developer Treyarch has said that it’s “time to shake up the meta” before a significant game tune pass.
The first season’s release, scheduled for Dec. 16, includes weapon game changes and more, Treyarch game designer Tony Flame confirmed on Twitter.
“After all, it has been almost a month since launch,” he said. “It’s time to shake the meta for the holidays.”
Some Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players will welcome the news of a major reorganization of the metadata, who feel that some of the weapons could work with a nerf. Two of the explosive rifles, the M16 and the AUG, are felt to be particularly powerful at the moment and can kill in the blink of an eye at a range of distances. The AK-47 can also be in line for a nerf.
Some feel that shotguns, which in this game are a secondary weapon, could make a nerf, but I’ve seen some players argue against a change.
Of particular note are sniper rifles, which have sparked debate. Some feel like they’re overpowered in Black Ops Cold War due to aim assist and lack of shudder. In previous Call of Duty games, including last year’s Modern Warfare, when you take damage you are knocked back. That is, your crosshair moves slightly upward when bullets hit you.
This damage knockback effect has proven to be controversial among the competitive Call of Duty multiplayer community, with many saying they would rather play without getting their target shot. In this sense, Treyarch gave people what they wanted: in Black Ops Cold War, recoil is primarily a mechanism to help players understand that they are taking damage without affecting the aiming position of their weapon. This means that your gun does not move with your screen to stay on target and eradicates headshots.
However, some say Black Ops Cold War sniper rifles could use a buff, because, they say, it takes too long to aim down.
This week, Treyarch revealed everything that is coming to Black Ops Cold War with the first season. Expect Prop Hunt, Nuketown Holiday, and 2v2 shootout.
