the Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta is almost upon us. The beta begins first on PlayStation 4 before opening to PC and Xbox One.
The two-weekend beta includes early access periods for all three platforms, as well as open beta times for all players.
To be part of the early access phase of any of the weekends, simply pre-order the game. However, I urge you to be cautious on that front: my impressions of the alpha weren’t positive in the least, and I’m still of the opinion that Activision should have delayed this until 2021 and given Modern war more time to flourish as a true games-as-a-service title.
I also think Modern war deserves a next-generation port, especially since War zone is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X.
But maybe the beta will change my mind. Maybe the beta version offers a better gun game, fewer gigantic maps, and a sound design that doesn’t sound like bullets have been etched into a can. Maybe the beta is the great redeemer, although without Gunfight, I can’t get as excited about a new Call Of Duty.
In any case, the beta starts this week and then starts again the following weekend. Here is everything you need to know.
Beta schedule:
Weekend 1 – Exclusive to PlayStation 4
- Early access begins: October 8 at 10 amPT
- Open beta begins: October 10th
- End of weekend 1: October 12 at 10 amPT
Weekend 2 – Beta on PS4, Xbox One and PC
- Early Access for Xbox and PC begins (PS4 Open Beta): October 15 at 10AM PT
- Xbox and PC open beta begins: October the 17th
- Open beta ends: October 19 at 10AM PT
File size
The file size for Xbox One and PC has yet to be announced, but the PS4 beta hits 31.1GB. Preloading on PS4 is now open, so download the beta as soon as possible so you’re ready to jump in tomorrow at 10am (or this weekend if you’re just joining the open beta).
Content
Activision and Treyarch haven’t announced a ton of details for the beta. There will be a map rotation that will likely be similar, but not exact, to alpha. Judging by the trailer (below) that includes the Miami night map and the satellite desert map. Hopefully some smaller maps too.
There will also be regular updates and changes during the beta, so the maps and modes are likely to change throughout. To begin with, these modes will be available:
- Team Deathmatch
- Domination
- VIP Escort
- Death confirmed
- Combined arms
- Fireteam Dirty Bomb Mode for 40 players
This means that we will have 6v6, 12v12 and 20v20 modes during the Cold War beta. Hopefully we’ll get some maps that really do suit 6v6 playstyles. Hopefully we’ll get more objective-based modes in the actual rotation as well, as my experience with Alpha was almost entirely TDM and Kill Confirmed with almost no dominance at all.
Trailer
I’ll say this – it’s refreshing to see a Call Of Duty trailer that’s not just blaring hip-hop music.
