BioWare exits put ‘Anthem’ reboot leader in charge of ‘Dragon Age 4’

Something quite wild seems to have happened at BioWare, as two giant figures, Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah, suddenly left the studio. Mass Effect’s Hudson had already left once and returned, while Darrah has been directing Dragon Age for years, including the upcoming Dragon Age 4.

The output of both at the same time has left the status of almost every BioWare project unclear, and created some really massive changes that I’m still trying to understand.

The biggest headline is that Christian dailey He’s now in charge of the new game Dragon Age, someone you might not know, but the person I do recognize is in charge of the ongoing effort to restart Anthem, posting blog post updates on the status of that every few months. Dailey has seen a meteoric and unlikely rise from being in charge of Anthem’s live updates after launch, following the game’s 2.0 reboot, and now apparently leading … the highest-profile project the studio has.

It is difficult to understand what exactly is happening in BioWare at the moment. Dragon Age 4 has already been internally rebooted at least once according to reports, and it still appears to be a long way from release with BioWare still displaying very little more than concept art or a few different landscape scenes to this day. He has now suffered the loss of Mark Darrah with Dailey replacing and this seems … extremely dire to his prospects, combined with everything else that has happened.

The rest of the BioWare announcement reiterates that Andromeda / Anthem’s Mike Gamble is still working on the next Mass Effect game, whatever that is, and we have almost no information on it. Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the remastered trilogy, continues to go as planned.

Anthem 2.0 has to be dead. I still had a hard time believing BioWare was dedicating resources to him in the first place, but casting Dailey for Dragon Age has likely sealed his fate, although nothing was announced about Anthem through all of this.

BioWare is coming off two extremely high-profile flaws, Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem, and it needed the next Dragon Age to impress, and the next Mass Effect to get players to believe in the franchise again. And hey, maybe Anthem could have been a similar story of change to No Man’s Sky, as it looked like significant changes were coming.

Now? Who knows. Obviously none of this inspires confidence in what may be going on in the studio, with all of their projects lacking release dates or frankly even proper teasers or teasers. We have no idea how many years it will be until we see any of these games or at this rate, Yes we will see you all. Mass Effect Legendary Edition in 2021 seems to be the only safe thing on the deck at this rate, and hopefully this will happen without major hiccups, as we’ve seen in other remasters.

There’s likely a lot more to this story, but we’ll have to wait for some internal reports to find out what’s going on here. Until then, we only have what BioWare tells us, that at this point there are still Dragon Age and Mass Effect projects. Beyond that, it is anyone’s guess.
