May 12 (Reuters) – Cameroon canceled the rest of its league season and declared PWD leaders Bamenda champions, the country’s soccer federation said on Tuesday.
Cameroon is the eighth African country to abandon plans to resume the season, which has been limited by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bamenda led Coton Sport by a single point, and had also played one game less, when the championship was suspended in mid-March. There were six rounds to go.
It is a first title for the club in the country’s northwest region, which is now qualifying for next season’s African Champions League.
No team will be relegated from the top flight, the federation added, but the top two teams in the second division will be promoted to an expanded league of 20 teams next season.
The leagues in Angola, Burkina Faso, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Mauritius and Niger have already canceled the rest of their season as African football faces the impact of the coronavirus. (Written by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Edited by Toby Davis)
