Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have recorded a video message, extending Christmas greetings to the people of Earth, lighting hope in a year challenged by a global pandemic. Up to seven astronauts are celebrating the Christmas season in space as NASA Expedition 64 crew members took a break. Astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Kate Rubins, and Japanese space program astronaut Soichi Noguchi sent an encouraging message of “resilience” and greetings to people around the world amidst the hardships of the global pandemic.
In a video shared by ISS on Twitter, the team can be seen spreading positivity by remembering the lives lost to health crises and acknowledging frontline workers. “We select that name [Resilience] in honor of the people around the world and the teams who helped make our mission possible for a year that changed all of our lives, “said Hopkins.” We would also like to remember everyone who has lost this year. “There could not be a more appropriate name to describe 2020,” Glover added. “The endurance of the human spirit is something we can really celebrate in this special season.” Resilience is the name of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that launched astronauts to the ISS last month.

Meanwhile, Walker said, “As we prepare to celebrate the holidays away from our loved ones, we look at our precious planet and it becomes clear how connected we really are.” Hopkins among the crew launched aboard the ISS on November 16, with astronauts Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Soichi Noguchi in Crew Dragon Resilience.
Christmas ‘away from the family’
In separate images, the Expedition 64 astronauts discussed the importance of the holidays away from home. Walker emphasized how truly connected human beings were both on earth and outside. “To me, it means the three ‘Fs, family, friends and food,” he said. Meanwhile, Kenny Todd, NASA’s deputy director of programs for the space station, reported in the video that the crew was going to get “some kind of Christmas food in orbit.” He said, “I don’t think that will surprise you, but nothing more than that, I don’t like being in front of Santa Claus.”
