CAIRO – October 4, 2020: Turkey has engaged in serious conflicts with large regional parties and intervened against Egypt, said Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, adding that this will not lead to a “good ending “.

Speaking to television host Ahmed Moussa on Sada El Balad, Aboul Gheit said that Turkey has intervened militarily in Syria, Iraq and Libya, as well as in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Turkish regime has also clashed with Greece and Cyprus over gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, Aboul Gheit said, noting that Italy has now taken a similar stance as France against the Turkish regime.

The head of the Arab League said that Turkey now resembles Iran, in terms of blatant interference in the affairs of other Arab countries.

“I oversee unprecedented turmoil in the region, which faces great threats and challenges, especially Turkish and Iranian interventions,” he noted.

In this regard, Aboul Gheit accused Iran of preventing the Houthi group from reaching a comprehensive agreement in Yemen, saying that the Houthis’ decision is related to Tehran.

Palestinian cause

Regarding the Palestinian cause, Aboul Gheit emphasized that the establishment of the Palestinian state is inevitable and urged the Palestinians not to lose hope. He called on the Palestinian factions to end divisions and place the best interests of the country above all other considerations.

He stressed that the Arab League has and will always support the Palestinian cause, and expressed amazement at some claims that it is defending the US peace plan.

He said that the Arab League, as well as the Palestinian leadership and people, are totally against this plan that takes everything away from the Palestinians and gives them nothing in return.

We have responsibilities and obligations towards the Palestinian cause, but at the same time we have the responsibility to preserve the pan-Arab body because now we find ourselves in a tragic situation, he said.

Aboul Gheit emphasized that the Arab countries did not turn away from the Palestinian cause.

He expressed regret at the current stance of the US administration towards the Palestinian issue, and said the current administration turned a blind eye to international law by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and giving Israel the green light to capture more Palestinian territories.

Water rights

The secretary general affirmed full Arab support for Egypt and Sudan in their negotiations with Ethiopia over their Renaissance dam.

The water resources of the Nile River are at the core of Arab national security, not just the national security of the two countries, said the head of the American League.

The same applies to Iraq and Syria’s water rights on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, he added.
