Apple has raised App Store prices in India, as well as in five other countries, namely Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa. The new development will go into effect for apps and in-app purchases made through the App Store in the coming days. Apple has provided developers with up-to-date price level charts to reflect changes in the prices of their applications. The price increase will also be displayed in the My Apps Pricing and Availability section through Apple’s Developer portal once the update is rolled out, the company said.
According to the announcement made through Apple’s developer website, the increase in App Store prices will reflect the two percent compensation rate, in addition to the existing 18 percent goods and services tax specifically in the case of India. The compensation tax was included in the Finance Law of 2016 and has been in force since April 1, 2020. It is aimed at certain non-resident companies.
In addition to India, the revised Apple App Store prices in Indonesia include the impact of the 10 percent value-added tax for developers located outside the country.
“When taxes or exchange rates change, we sometimes need to update prices in the App Store,” the company said in the announcement.
Along with the new changes, Apple stated that prices for apps and in-app purchases would also be adjusted in Albania and Iceland to align with prices used in other markets that sell in US dollars and value added tax.
Updated price level charts have been provided to developers to show the increase in prices for their particular applications. Additionally, the changes will be visible in the Pricing and Availability section through Apple’s developer portal, and developer income will be adjusted accordingly. Apple also noted that the developer’s income would be calculated based on the price without taxes.
“You can change the price of your apps and in-app purchases (including auto-renewable subscriptions) at any time on App Store Connect. If you offer subscriptions, you can choose to keep prices for existing subscribers, ”the company said.
Updated price level charts show as a result of the update, apps and in-app purchases in India via the App Store will now be charged at a minimum of Rs. 89. This is higher than the previous minimum charge of Rs. 80.
Apple has not provided details on whether it would also adjust the prices of its services, including Apple Music, Apple TV + and iCloud. There is also no set date when the price increase will apply to end users.
Notably, this isn’t the first time Apple has updated App Store prices for some particular countries. Last year, the company revised prices specifically in Japan due to the increase in excise tax rates. It also increased the price at a 25 percent rate in the UK due to a massive drop in exchange rates due to Brexit. Also, Apple conducted the above review on App Store prices in India in January 2017.
