It seems that the Apple Watch Series 3 is struggling to keep up with WatchOS 7.
As seen by 9to5Mac, users have taken to Apple’s support forum to report performance issues like sudden reboots, battery drain, and more.
It’s only been a few weeks since Apple officially released the final version of its latest operating system, which includes some useful new features like sleep tracking, Siri shortcuts, and handwash detection, to name a few. But one look at the forum and it’s clear that the new operating system is doing more harm than good for at least some Series 3 owners.
One user, known as Tjay64, started a thread titled “watchOS7 issues” and wrote:
My series 3 completed an automatic overnight update to Watch OS7. Today it turned itself off at least 3 times, crashed while on my wrist about 4 times, failed to upload multi-face complications (weather, activity rings, date, etc.), disconnected from my phone at least twice. It has also dropped to less than 50% battery in about 8 hours, usually still in the 80s. Is anyone else having these problems? This has been the most buggy update I’ve seen.
What followed were 12 pages of responses with other Series 3 owners pointing out similar issues and more. Additionally, nearly 650 people clicked on the “I have this question too” button below the post.
Before its release, WatchOS 7 was in public beta for the summer, giving Apple plenty of time to refine its new capabilities based on bugs reported by its users. But it looks like the company could have let this one slip away.
According to a user who posted on the Apple forum, known as, this was an existing problem.
I ran the public beta on series 3, the beta versions of which have a diagnostic reporting platform, the problem was reported to Apple 45 times during the 30 day trial period where it was not fixed before the public release so you know the problem. with 3 and 4
Of course, it is normal for public beta versions to come with heaps of problems, but one would only hope it would be resolved with the release of the final version.
It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the only WatchOS 7 complaint thread on the internet. There’s another one on the MacRumors forums specifically for Series 3, and others are also reporting random reboots and battery issues.
It is not clear why this is happening, but the Series 3 has an older processor than the Series 4 and above. While Apple tends to discontinue its previous-gen model around the time a new Apple Watch is announced, it has yet to phase out the Series 3, in an apparent effort to keep a more basic and affordable wearable on the line.
Although it’s only been three years since the Series 3 was launched, it would make sense to wonder if WatchOS 7 is too much for the older watch to handle. And now that the budget-friendly new Apple Watch SE has joined the family, it makes us wonder if the company plans to discontinue the third-gen watch next year.
Regardless, the Series 3 is still just as important as its newest smartwatches given that it is compatible with WatchOS 7. But Apple has yet to release a fix for the problem.
Users suggest switching to WatchOS 6. However, even that has been a struggle for some – after a hard reset, there doesn’t seem to be an option to revert to the previous operating system.
Others have suggested that the problem has to do with a lack of memory on the device. While freeing up some storage helped load the operating system onto the device, some report that the same issues mentioned above are still occurring.
We reached out to Apple and will update this story if we receive a response.
