The x86-amd64 architecture is still the mode … moreWhile I agree with the difference in performance between ARM and x86 processors, I don’t think Apple is “digging its own grave.” Let’s consider a few things. Apple has been successful on Macs despite their low market share, which means they have become fond of a niche. A pretty profitable niche at that. I think the ARM-based mac is just an evolution of that niche. I mean, why share the profits with Intel and AMD if the average consumer is okay with just one ARM processor handling their Excel and web browsing? So let’s consider your marketing team has plenty of room to show off when it comes to selling battery life to consumers. I think Apple is definitely onto something here.

The x86-amd64 architecture remains the most powerful power chip you will ever find, until the next generation of CISC arrives.
15w from 2020 vs 105w from 2000 era chipset, but produced the same year of 2020? You are delirious.
Why would game developers port the game from Windows to Mac anyway? Mac is not known as a gaming rig. It is very rare to find triple AAA titles that run natively on Mac. Only a few titles run on both Windows and Linux on OpenGL or Vulkan. You mean metal API? Yes, Apple literally just digs its own graves.

People think that ARM is this miraculous magic bullet. It is not. It has some benefits, especially in low-power designs like portable devices, but you can’t beat the laws of thermodynamics with it.

Although X86 chips mainly use RISC-like instructions, one cannot think but wonder why they are terribly inefficient and do not scale well.
If Apple proves it can make a 15W A-series-based processor work the same as a 105W Intel desktop, that would have industry-wide repercussions.

But the only concern is whether the open nature of the Mac will end entirely and everything will be locked in the Apple app store just like iPhones.
