Bloomberg says the iPhone maker plans to launch a niche standalone VR headset in preparation for a more mainstream AR game.

Apple plans to launch a standalone virtual reality headset next year, according to a Bloomberg report.

Citing “people in the know,” Bloomberg said the headphones are intended “to be an expensive niche precursor to a more ambitious augmented reality product” that would have higher aspirations as a mainstream product.

In addition to being more expensive than existing VR headsets, Apple’s VR headsets are expected to feature higher resolution images as well.

Apple is also reportedly making the device lighter by giving it a cloth exterior and smaller by eliminating the space headphones generally leave open to accommodate users who wear glasses.

Instead, the company is working through the logistics of a system in which custom prescription lenses can be inserted into the headphones.

Apple has long been reported to be targeting the virtual reality and augmented reality market.

In 2017, Bloomberg said the company was considering a 2020 release of an AR headset.

Last year, Bloomberg said the company was working on a VR / AR headset combo by 2021 or 2022, with lightweight AR lenses in 2023.
