Apple has released macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 to update which aims to fix the battery charging issue on the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models. Some MacBook Pro users with the older models have had problems with their laptops stopping charging beyond one percent. To address this issue, the company has released a battery replacement program for older MacBook Pro 2016 and 2017 models. MacBook Pro users can also install the macOS Catalina 10.15.7 companion update as the new version will help to troubleshoot the battery.
Affected users with their MacBook Pro laptops can verify eligibility for the replacement program using the battery status in their computer’s system preferences. Battery Status displays a “Recommended Service” message for users who cannot charge their MacBook Pro laptops more than one percent. Users can access the battery status by clicking on the Apple Menu, followed by System Preferences, Battery, and Battery in MacOS Big Sur.
Users with older macOS can check battery status by holding down the option key and clicking the battery icon in the menu bar. If the status shows that the battery is normal, the battery is not affected by the problem.
Those with battery problems can contact Apple to replace the battery, free of charge. The company will examine the laptop prior to service to confirm if the device is eligible for free battery replacement.
Devices that are eligible for the battery replacement program include 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro (two Thunderbolt 3 ports), 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro (two Thunderbolt 3 ports), 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro (four Thunderbolt 3 ports ), 13-inch MacBook Pro 2017 (four Thunderbolt 3 ports), 15-inch MacBook Pro 2016, 15-inch MacBook Pro 2017.
