After a nearly two-week ban, fans of Fortnite, a video game in which players fight each other until the last one is standing, can log into the game on Apple’s login system, Reuters reported.
Epic Games, the video game maker, said the Cupertino, California-based global technology company has granted an indefinite extension for gamers to access the survival game.
David’s battle against Goliath began last month when Epic tweeted that Apple was planning to cancel his App Store account starting August 28. The dispute began when the Maryland-based game maker introduced a payment platform designed to bypass the App Store payment system. and your commission of 30 percent.
Epic filed a lawsuit alleging “retaliation” by Apple alleging that its practices restrict competition. Epic asked the Northern California district court to stop Apple from blocking the game.
“Apple’s removal of Fortnite is another example of how Apple wields its enormous power to impose unreasonable restrictions and illegally maintain its 100 percent monopoly on the payment processing market in the iOS app,” Epic Games wrote in legal filing.
Apple defended itself.
In response, the tech giant filed a countersuit against Epic accusing the software developer of greed and deception in the fight over the iPhone maker’s app store. Apple asked the judge to award punitive damages and end Epic’s alleged unfair business practices.
“The Epic lawsuit is nothing more than a basic disagreement over money,” Apple said in its filing. “Although Epic presents itself as a modern corporate Robin Hood, it is actually a multi-billion dollar company that just doesn’t want to pay anything for the tremendous value it gets from the App Store.”
Before a hearing scheduled for later this month, U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne González Rogers for the Northern District of California issued a temporary divided order and ruled that the global consumer electronics and computer software company cannot prevent the game creator from accessing the tools of the Unreal Engine, a popular game engine developed by Epic that is used to create 3D games on Apple platforms.
Rogers also denied the game maker’s motion to restore Fortnite on the App Store.
“Epic Games and Apple are free to litigate each other, but their dispute should not wreak havoc on passersby,” Rogers wrote in a ruling. “Apple has chosen to act tough and in doing so has impacted non-parties and the third-party developer ecosystem.”
On Thursday (September 10), Epic tweeted, “Apple previously stated that it would end ‘Sign in with Apple’ support for Epic Games accounts after September 11, 2020, but today provided an indefinite extension. Still, we recommend that you prepare your accounts now for the ‘Sign in with Apple’ removal. “
