(Pocket-lint) – Apple is possibly making a new iPhone charging accessory: a battery that is magnetically connected via MagSafe.
According to Bloomberg, Apple has already developed prototypes, some with a rubber exterior. The battery pack accessory has been in development for at least a year, but there have been a few roadblocks as the iPhone software sometimes thinks the pack is overheating. Bloomberg said Apple is taking the announcement of charging accessories seriously since it had to sideline the AirPower charging pad previously announced in 2019.
Note that the news about a new battery pack started to appear after a reference was found in the beta code for iOS 14.5, as discovered by MacRumors. Bloomberg said the reference was removed and ongoing development issues could cause the accessory to be delayed or canceled.
In addition to the accessory news, the Bloomberg report also noted that the iPhone lineup will likely not receive support for reverse wireless charging any time soon. Apple is reportedly interested in allowing its devices to charge each other, and that it even hoped that the 2019 iPhone range could charge AirPods wirelessly. That capability never came to fruition and is “unlikely in the near future,” according to Bloomberg.
