Apple and Samsung should be careful. Another rival smartphone maker has announced a significant advance in camera technology, and this time there is video.
Popular smartphone maker Xiaomi has revealed a new version of its flagship Mi 10 Ultra smartphone with an invisible under-display selfie camera, and the phone could be ready for launch as early as next year.
In a video tweeted by the eternal leaker, Ice universe, Xiaomi shows the unreleased smartphone alongside the current model that features a punch-hole-style camera at the top left of the screen.
Maintaining camera and screen quality are two big challenges when developing an under-screen camera. However, aside from the obvious lack of perforations on the new model, there appears to be little visible difference between the two displays, other than a small variation in brightness and color temperature. The video also makes it impossible to judge the quality of the new camera. A demo selfie is taken and the results look good, but there is no direct comparison to the current version of piercings.
However, from what we can see, the results look promising to anyone hoping to test the new technology, although it remains to be seen how the new model will perform in the real world.
Xiaomi currently owns 10% of the global smartphone market share, according to Mobile Device Monitor, and its Mi 10 Ultra is ranked # 1 in Dxomark’s camera rankings at the time of this writing.
For now, all eyes will be on fellow Chinese manufacturer ZTE, which has already announced plans to launch the world’s first smartphone with an under-display camera on September 1. These significant advancements come at a time when Samsung has yet to reveal its own. camera under the screen and Apple continues to implement a large ‘notch’ in its latest iPhones. So will the quality be good enough? We will know very soon.
