In the next few days, Apple is likely to announce its next iPads. We know there are two model updates coming up imminently, but it has been mainly assumed that it would be an iPad Pro and fourth-generation iPad Air.
But now it looks like the next version could be for the entry-level iPad, and it could be a surprising update that will be the biggest change since the tablet was launched 10 years ago. These are the salient features of what is predicted.
Large screen
Design schematics published by 91 Mobiles and spotted by Apple Insider show an iPad that looks almost identical to the iPad Pro, with the largest screen ever on an iPad, bigger even than the iPad Air.
If true, the next iPad will sport a 10.8-inch screen, larger than the 10.5-inch screen on the iPad Air.
Face ID on entry-level iPad
Narrow bezels all the way around and no Touch ID button will also be a first for the iPad. While recent reports have suggested a full-screen iPad Air with Touch ID mounted on the power button, this report claims that Apple will move up to Face ID, currently only on the iPad Pro.
USB-C
The suggestion is that this will be the first iPad beyond the Pro to use the USB-C connector. This will mean that the iPhone is the only product that is completely faithful to Lightning.
Single chamber
The schematics show a single rear camera on the iPad, so whatever it is, it sure isn’t an iPad Pro, which is the first, and so far only, tablet to feature multiple rear cameras (oh, and a scanner LiDAR).
Magic keyboard
Of all the rumors, this is the one that excites me the most. The Magic Keyboard on iPad Pro is magnificent and has transformed the way I use the tablet. It’s ridiculously comfortable to type and works brilliantly.
If this is true, who will buy the iPad Air?
True, these details outperform the current iPad Air in every way. So it’s possible that these schematics are actually for the next Air, although it’s rumored that it won’t arrive until next spring and it’s the entry-level tablet expected to arrive next month.
But maybe Apple has other plans. You could retire the Air and have a streamlined lineup: iPad, iPad mini, iPad Pro. Or maybe there’s something spectacular in the Air lineup next year.
By the way, if these schematics are for the iPad Air, they also represent the biggest advance for an iPad Air.
What is the end result?
These rumors conflict with the recently leaked iPad Air instruction manual. So these schematics are for Air, which would be consistent, or one of them is false.
If what we’re looking at here is the Air, due out in 2021, then we can expect a more iterative update to the iPad in a few days. After all, if this is the next iPad, I think we can imagine that there will be a considerable price increase.
Which doesn’t quite ring true: The iPad is easily the best value high-end tablet out there, so I can’t see Apple wanting to raise the price of its entry-level device and make it less affordable.
The iPad is so good that even a smooth and iterative update will make its value even better, this seems like a more likely outcome to me, and that we will see these schematics being used for another iPad, the iPad Air, in its biggest update. of history. Although not yet.
But, just for a second, imagine this is all true and we’ll see it announced in a few days as the next iPad. How cool would that be?
