Almost every detail about the iPhone 12 line has been leaked, from its external redesign to the price hike, and now an accident in Apple’s supply chain has confirmed the company’s launch strategy.
The stickers for Apple’s official iPhone 12 silicone cases have been photographed by trustworthy DuanRui leaker, revealing the company’s naming strategy for the range: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 12 mini. But that’s only half the story.
First, the brand, which is both a surprise and a relief. It is a surprise because multiple leaks have suggested that the successor to the iPhone 11 would be renamed iPhone 12 Max or iPhone 12 Plus with the new 5.4-inch model, taking the name iPhone 12. This would have caused incalculable confusion and, given that Apple already has the Mac mini and iPad mini brands, an iPhone 12 mini expands the iPhone range in a simple and intuitive way.
Second, the design. The stickers on the cases reveal that Apple will sell only three silicone cases with the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro sharing the same case. While the displays lined up, the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 were noticeably thicker than the iPhone XS and iPhone 11. Just because the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro fit in the same case means that this is no longer the case.
The main reason behind this is likely the range change to OLED. Both the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 used cheaper, lower-resolution LCD panels, but in 2020 all iPhone 12 models have moved to OLED, which is thinner, more energy efficient, and has higher contrast levels. . For Apple (and third-party case makers) this also makes case manufacturing a lot easier.
But the savvy branding and accessories alone can’t hide the growing concerns about the iPhone 12 range. Disappointing performance, smaller batteries, the same big notch, and significant price increases have been uncovered in recent weeks. Apple’s highlights of a new boxy design, a 3D camera, and 5G connectivity may not be enough to make potential customers’ hearts race.
Either way, we’ll find out soon. The iPhone 12 release date is fast approaching.
