Another leaker is casting doubt on the possibility of an imminent hardware release, and Tuesday’s press release is expected to only contain details of when the “iPhone 12” fall launch event will take place.
Various rumors have pointed to Apple holding some kind of event in September, with at least one leaker claiming that an event will take place during the week of September 7. From Bloomberg Mark Gurman on Twitter, the latest whispers from an Apple press release may not necessarily be for a product launch.
Posted on Twitter on Sunday, Gurman proposes that people not “get overly excited about rumors of new Apple products this week.” Instead, he thinks it is more likely to be an announcement related to an upcoming event for the “iPhone 12” and the “Apple Watch Series 6”, one that will almost certainly be “virtual.”
I wouldn’t get too excited about rumors about new Apple products coming this week. I think it’s more likely: An announcement of the upcoming (of course, virtual) September iPhone / Apple Watch event.
– Mark Gurman (@markgurman) September 6, 2020
The post follows an earlier tweet from serial leaker Jon Prosser, who claimed that Apple was preparing a press release for September 8, which would be posted at 9 a.m. ET. Prosser did not discuss Sunday what he hoped would be in the press release, but said the time could change and it would require the press to have been “informed the day of” before publication.
Gurman’s warning is quite cautious, given Apple’s tendency to provide at least a week’s warning before holding an event related to a major product launch. For the 2019 “By Invitation Only” special event for the iPhone 11, Apple informed the media about the September 10 date on August 29, giving a 12-day warning.
Even for a virtual event with a pre-made video, one that could end up being similar to how Apple delivered the WWDC 2020 keynote address, Apple can still go wrong in providing an advanced warning of the upcoming iPhone launch.
Expected products
Apple is largely expected to reveal four new iPhone models during the event, consisting of two “iPhone 12” models and two “iPhone 12 Pro” versions. As well as differing between cameras, Pro models are believed to repurpose the iPad Pro’s LiDAR sensor for depth mapping, and 5G connectivity is also believed to be an important addition across the board for this generation.
The event may also be the launch site for the “Apple Watch Series 6,” which this year may include a plastic version, Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) to improve wireless performance and blood oxygenation control.
A new iPad model could be on the way, potentially in the form of the “iPad Air 4,” which could borrow the design and the second-generation Apple Pencil from the iPad Pro.
The “AirTags”, which are often rumored, can also appear. The “AirTags”, consisting of a Bluetooth and UWB equipped tag, will potentially work with Apple’s existing Find My app to help users locate the missing items to which they are connected.
