Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already sold better than Nintendo had initially expected.

In a new Q&A, the company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed that the latest version of Animal Crossing has exceeded expected sales for life.

“Initial sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons have exceeded our expectations,” says the head of Nintendo (translated by Nintendo Everything).

“We were targeting the current sales numbers for the life of the game considering that fans had waited so long for this game, but it all happened at a much faster rate than we expected.”

Furukawa also added that “about 50%” of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players in Japan, the United States, and Europe bought a digital copy of the game.

This follows the release of Nintendo’s financial results last week which revealed that New Horizons shipped 11.7 million units during its first 11 days of sale, a figure that rose to 13.41 million in its first six weeks.

As we noted last week, this makes Animal Crossing: New Horizon the best release for a Switch game, surpassing 12.9 million Pokemon Sword and Shield (over nine weeks).
