Android 11 launches today for Pixel and more

Google announced that Android 11, the latest version of the operating system, would be released today. And it’s not just coming to Pixel phones either – OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Oppo phones are getting it too.

Specifically, the phones that will receive the update will be the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, as well as the Oppo X2 and Reno 3. It is not yet clear which Xiaomi or realme phones will receive the update today.

Android 11 includes several features in the big update, focusing on “conversations, connected devices, privacy and much more,” according to the official blog. The most exciting feature, in my opinion, is the built-in screen recording, a rare feature that was on iOS before Android. It also updates the media controls so that they are in the Quick Settings menu and generally look cleaner.

Another particularly useful feature that is implemented with this update is Bubbles, which keeps conversations floating above whatever application you are using in the titular Bubbles, which you tap to quickly enter the conversation without leaving the other application. Android 11 also groups chat notifications in its own section above all other notifications, which is useful.

Android 11 also has a new power menu, which you can access by long pressing the power button. At the top are your power controls, with your Google Pay options just below them. It has controls for all of your connected smart home devices, so you can access them quickly. Google is also adding new privacy features that allow you to give an app one-time access to your apps or review permissions for apps that haven’t been used.

Those aren’t all the new features, obviously, just some of the biggest ones. Overall, it’s an easy-to-use update, adding several things that will make using Android a little more convenient. If you want to see all the features that the new operating system includes, visit the site here.
