That the Android One program is falling apart was clear to everyone when Xiaomi announced that it will not release new phones for it. The Android One program was designed for manufacturers to quickly obtain the latest and cleanest version of the Android operating system for their devices. Also, the purpose of the program was that manufacturers did not worry too much about updates that bring security patches. The only relevant player left in the show right now is Nokia Mobile with its Nokia devices, but things are not looking good. While the monthly security patches continue to arrive on a regular basis, the most important and significant updates are already overdue.
We are seeing Nokia Mobile marketing the latest Android One devices as Android 11 ready instead of shipping them with the latest version of the operating system on the market. The reason for this could be in the update errors, so it is better to wait until Android 11 matures a bit. Xiaomi started releasing the latest Android for its Xiaomi Mi A3 device, and things are not going well at all. Users Report device freezing and unresponsive after installation, even if placed in charger. There is not much information on what is causing the problem as the update has just been released, but apparently Xiaomi is aware of the problem and is working on a solution.
Nokia Mobile is working on the Android 11 update for its smartphones, or currently, Nokia 8.3 5G only as the Geekbench results of 8.3 5G can be found with Android 11, but the exact release date is not announced yet. According to the update release roadmap, Android 11 should reach Nokia 8.3 5G and Nokia 5.3 early in the first quarter of 2021. Perhaps it is better to test it thoroughly before its launch, as Nokia 8.3 5G already has some Errors (proximity sensor not working well, for example) that need to be addressed.
Also, Google might rethink the entire Android One program because if the devices within that club aren’t the first to get the latest updates, then what’s the purpose?
