The first AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors were launched with flying colors last week and the two main SKUs, the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and Ryzen 7 5800X, were featured in a Bit-Tech review on launch day. Rave reviews have added fuel to the fire in terms of demand, but prior to launch, AMD’s chief gaming marketing and solutions architect Frank Azor had assured his Twitter audience that supplies would be plentiful at launch. Unfortunately, it seems to be the case that PC enthusiasts are finding it very difficult to get Ryzen 5000 at the time of writing, so what has happened?
Providing some background on the 2020 tech consumer malaise, Nvidia has been scheduled for its “paper release” of GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards. The green team delayed the launch of the RTX 3070 fifteen days to try to avoid That the history of the RTX 30 was repeated, but the maneuver seems to have been quite futile. This is firefighting behavior rather than exhaustive planning and execution, and could be considered embarrassing for a company that is so big on ML and AI. A few weeks ago, a Twitterer commented on the Nvidia fiasco and bet that AMD would land in the same situation with its upcoming hardware releases, but Azor was quick to reject such a claim and accepted the bet (of pride rather than profit) from $ 10.
With AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs seemingly sold out everywhere within hours of launch, it’s easy to agree with the “paper release” accusation. However, Azor paints a different picture. In a Tweet this weekend, the AMD executive wrote that “There is a big difference between a ‘paper launch’ and shipping tons of units, but demand exceeds supply.”
While people can and probably will continue to argue about running the Ryzen 5000 launch until now, what’s more important is what happens next. According to UK computer and components retailer SCAN, the drought will wind down pleasantly quickly. Their pre-order and stock chart is looking bad at the moment, with nearly 2,700 waiting for their Vermeer CPU orders, but AMD has apparently assured them that “there will be a lot of stock in the next 2 weeks.” If you are interested in purchasing a Vermeer chip in the near future, it may be worth keeping an eye on the stock situation.
