PC enthusiasts have faced an all too familiar problem with supplies of the new AMD Ryzen 5000 processors. The first of the 7nm Zen 3 Vermeer CPUs has been acquired by enthusiastic PC builders and upgraders, and that has led to, unsurprisingly, little to no availability at PC component retailers. We saw the same sad story unfold with Nvidia RTX 30 Series graphics cards, but is it the same? Was Ryzen 5000 a ‘paper release’? AMD’s chief gaming and marketing solutions architect Frank Azor says no, and there are also encouraging statements about retailers’ actions.
In September Azor replied to a Tweet scoffs by suggesting that AMD’s next products would be “paper releases” similar to Ampere GeForce graphics cards. Azor publicly accepted a $ 10 bet, assuring many that upcoming AMD products will be available to buy without too much effort.
Fast forward to the release of the first AMD Ryzen 5000 processors and many enthusiasts were left in queues, waiting lists, etc., dissatisfied but ready to part with their hard-earned money. On Sunday, the unavailability caused a Twitter user to screech that the CPU launch was actually “although a paper toss”. The AMD executive objected to this by explaining that “There is a big difference between a ‘paper launch’ and shipping tons of units, but demand exceeds supply.”
Goshawk’s point is moot, and will likely be judged by how well supplies are replenished over the next several weeks. One of the UK’s largest computer and component retailers, Scan, provides some indication of the scale of supply AMD needs to satisfy to make sure this is not remembered as a paper release.
By joining its Nvidia RTX 30 series status pages, Scan has created a new tab for AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors. At the time of writing this report, it has approximately 2,600 pre-order customers patiently waiting for stock. The table should be updated shortly.
Scan provides some interesting background for your Vermeer sales experience. Said this was the “The best-selling CPU launch we’ve ever seen” and other UK retailers experienced the same. Looking to the future, the retailer says that “AMD assures us that there will be a lot of inventory in the next 2 weeks, so we will update this table each time we get more information.” Scan operates a pre-order queue system.
The next big launch of PC components for your calendars will be another AMD: AMD Radeon RX 6800 (XT) graphics cards to launch on Wednesday the 18thth November, with the RX 6900 XT to follow on the 8th December.
