It has been many years since PC gamers have had a real choice when it comes to high-end graphics cards. Once it surpassed a few hundred dollars, the leader in graphics chips NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) reigned supreme. AMD has tried and failed several times over the past few years to compete with NVIDIA at the high end. There was the Fury X in 2015, which failed to disrupt the status quo. A pair of RX Vega graphics cards in 2017 targeted the $ 400 to $ 500 price range, but were trying to catch up with NVIDIA cards that had been on the market for more than a year at the time. Then there was the Radeon VII in 2019, which failed to effectively compete against NVIDIA’s RTX 2080.
AMD may have finally cracked the code with its RX 6000 series of graphics cards announced last week. Based on its RDNA 2 architecture, the same architecture that powers the graphics chips in the next generation of game consoles, AMD has apparently made great strides in both performance and efficiency. If the company’s benchmarks are to be believed, NVIDIA will now have to fight to maintain its high-level market share.

Price to sell
AMD announced three new graphics cards last week: the RX 6800 is the lowest offering priced at $ 579; the RX 6800 XT offers a bit more performance for $ 649; and the RX 6900 XT is the monster of the bunch, priced at $ 999. This announcement comes shortly after NVIDIA released its GeForce RTX 3000 series cards, which are being sold at many online retailers.
While third-party reviews of new AMD graphics cards will provide a detailed look at how they perform, AMD has released a number of benchmarks that should be of concern to NVIDIA. While AMD’s new cards don’t outperform comparable NVIDIA products in every game, most of the time they come out ahead.
AMD compared the performance of its trio of RX 6000 cards to NVIDIA’s RTX 3090, RTX 3080 and RTX 2080 Ti from last year. The RTX 3070 works similarly to the RTX 2080 Ti, so the older card offers a reasonable proxy.

AMD’s benchmarks for Borderlands 3 running at 4K resolution with the highest graphics settings spell trouble for NVIDIA. Both the RX 6900 XT and RX 6800 XT outperformed NVIDIA’s much more expensive RTX 3090, and the RX 6800 outperforms the RTX 2080 Ti by a wide margin.
Since these benchmarks come directly from AMD, they should be taken with a grain of salt. But if they are close to being accurate, AMD will break into the high-end graphics card market in November, when the RX 3000 series starts rolling out.
