AMD recently showed off its new Ryzen 5000 processors, which use the company’s Zen 3 architecture, but it also gave us a sneak peek at its upcoming RDNA 2 line of graphics cards, including the flagship ‘Big Navi,’ and it looks pretty impressive. .
One of the big themes of the AMD Ryzen 5000 launch was how good these processors are in gaming and to prove it, AMD showed benchmark results of its high-end 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X processor paired with an RDNA graphics card. two.
While we do not know which AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics card was used in the benchmarks, we imagine it to be the flagship ‘Big Navi’ GPU. Why? Well first, AMD CEO Lisa Su showed off an RTX 6000 series GPU on stage and announced that “now we affectionately call [it] ‘Big Navi’ thanks to many of you who dubbed us … It’s absolutely beautiful and by far the most powerful gaming GPU we’ve ever built. “
So after checking the Big Navi name, it would be strange if AMD was using a lesser card. Also, with AMD pairing it with one of their high-end CPUs, it would be strange for the company to use a mid-range card, as it would presumably want to show the best results.
4K power
Based on benchmarks AMD showed, the Radeon RX 6000 series GPU and Ryzen 9 5900X combo appear to be able to handle some of the most graphically demanding PC games at their highest graphics settings with 4K resolution. (3,840 x 2,160).
So Borderlands 3 in its ‘Badass Quality’ hits 61 Frames Per Second (FPS). Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at Ultra Quality hit 88 FPS, and Gears 5 also scored 73 FPS at Ultra Quality.
If you’re planning on gaming with a 4K monitor or TV, AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs seem like great options, although we don’t know the exact specs and pricing details yet, which are pretty important. Hopefully we’ll hear more on October 28, when AMD hosts another event to showcase its GPUs in full.
Meanwhile, Tom’s Hardware has compared these results to benchmarks taken with Nvidia cards to get an idea of how AMD’s GPU compares at 4K. As the website points out, the test platform they used uses an Intel Core i9-9900K processor, so these won’t be exactly the same, but the benchmarks are mostly dependent on the GPU anyway, so it still gives us an idea.
According to Tom’s Hardware testing, the AMD Big Navi card matches the Nvidia RTX 3080 in Borderlands 3 in 4K using the ‘Badass Quality’ setting. However, perhaps unsurprisingly, it can’t compete with the beastly RTX 3090, which scored a whopping 69.1 FPS (versus Big Navi’s 61 FPS).
However, with Gears 5 at 4K, the Big Navi GPU struggles to match the RTX 3080, which scored 79.6FPS compared to AMD’s score of 73 FPS. Once again the RTX 3090 is way ahead at 87FPS.
So it looks like AMD’s flagship GPU will be almost on the same level as Nvidia’s RTX 3080. Does this mean that AMD’s dream of having a “killer Nvidia” GPU is over? Not quite, as there are a few things to keep in mind.
First, as we said earlier, these are not direct comparisons. A fairer test will be to test all the GPUs using the exact same test hardware, and that is something we will do when we have the AMD Radeon RX 6000 GPUs for review.
Second, we don’t know which RX 6000 GPU was used. While it might be AMD’s most powerful GPU, there is always a chance that AMD is withholding an even more powerful GPU for a surprise presentation.
Also, as Dr. Su notes, “we still have a few weeks until launch and the team is working very hard to adjust things,” suggesting that we could see better results with the final product.
Finally, we should also point out that we don’t know anything about the price. If this GPU is significantly cheaper than the RTX 3080, while offering comparable performance, this could be a huge game changer. In the past, AMD has had no qualms about undermining the competition.
Whatever happens, now is an incredibly exciting time to be a PC gamer.
