LONDON, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) – The weekend produced two absolutely incredible results in the Premier League: Manchester United lost 6-1 at home to Tottenham, while defending champions Liverpool were beaten 7-2 away by the Aston Villa.
Liverpool’s defense was invaded for the full 90 minutes at Villa Park with Ollie Watkins scoring a hat-trick in the first half, Jack Grealish scoring twice and John McGinn and newcomer Ross Barkley also springing into action.
Although Liverpool substitute goalkeeper Adrian was to blame for the first goal, Villa again and again punched holes in Liverpool’s backline and could have had an eighth when Watkins hit the crossbar in the final minute.
Mohamed Salah scored two goals for Liverpool, but that was little consolation as Liverpool became the first reigning champions to concede seven goals since 1953.
It wasn’t the only surprising result of the weekend. Tottenham inflicted a humiliating 6-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford when the home team’s defense imploded in a disastrous performance that the Spurs exploited to the full.
United got off to a dream start when Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in the second minute, but was soon left behind when Tanguy Ndombele and then Son Heung-min scored for Spurs.
Things got worse for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team when Anthony Martial was sent off for lashing out at Erik Lamela, and Harry Kane and Son made it 4-1 before half time.
Serge Aurier added a fifth shortly after the break, and a Kane penalty 10 minutes from time rounded the score in a game that could put Solskjaer’s job at risk.
Arsenal continued their positive start to the season with a 2-1 home win over Sheffield United, but Mikel Arteta’s side had to endure a frenzied end to their game after David McGoldrick scored a spectacular home goal in the 83 minutes for the visitors.
Arsenal had led 2-0 through goals from Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe, but McGoldrick’s goal left them clinging to the final whistle.
An excellent performance by the West Ham team saw them rewarded with a surprise 3-0 win over Leicester City, who had beaten Manchester City 5-2 a week ago.
Michail Antonio, Pablo Fornals and Jared Bowen scored West Ham’s goals in the 14th, 34th and 84th minutes of the game.
Meanwhile, Southampton claimed a routine 2-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion, who are still seeking their first win of the season.
Moussa Djenepo scored his first home goal for Southampton in the 41st minute and Oriol Romeu launched a sensational volley with just over 20 minutes left for the Saints to maintain their second clean sheet in two games.
The Wolves also claimed three points thanks to Pedro Neto’s goal in the 56th minute at home to a Fulham who are still seeking their first point since returning to the top flight.
James Rodriguez scored twice and added an assist as Everton beat Brighton 4-2 to maintain their 100 percent winning record on Saturday.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header in the 16th minute put Everton ahead, but Brighton leveled through Neal Maupay after a mistake by Jordan Pickford.
Yerry Mina’s header put Everton in front at the edge of the break and James completed an excellent individual display with two goals in the second half.
Leeds United and Manchester City produced a thrilling 1-1 draw that lived up to expectations in terms of entertainment and shady defense.
Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the visitors in the 17th minute, but Rodrigo Moreno’s first goal for Leeds in the 59th minute, following a mistake by the City Ederson goalkeeper, gave his team a point they more than deserved.
Ben Chilwell made a perfect debut for Chelsea with the first goal and an assist from Kurt Zouma in Chelsea’s 4-0 home win over Crystal Palace, which was completed with two penalties from Jorginho.
Saturday ended with Newcastle United winning 3-1 at home over Burnley thanks to an excellent performance from winger Allan Saint-Maximin and two goals from Callum Wilson. Final product
