Seattle-based Alaska Airlines has expanded its commitment to the Boeing 737 MAX 9 by thirteen additional aircraft.
These new aircraft will be leased to Air Lease Corporation (ALC), which in return will purchase ten of the airline’s Airbus A320 aircraft. Alaska Airlines says delivery of the new 737 MAX is scheduled for 2021 and 2022. Additionally, the A320s to be sold to ALC will be leased by the airline for “a short period of time.”
Boeing’s troubled 737 MAX family, which has not been grounded by the FAA a week ago, will be introduced to Alaska Airlines’ fleet in March 2021 when the airline begins operating the first five such aircraft. Before today’s announcement, the airline had a total of 32 Boeing 737 MAX 9s ordered from Boeing.
The Airbus A320 family came to the Alaska Airlines fleet in 2016 when the airline acquired Virgin America in a deal worth more than $ 4 billion. The Virgin America integration was completed in early 2018. However, the number of Airbus aircraft since then has steadily declined, all A319s were in stock earlier this year and the number of A320s will reach just 22 by the end of 2021.
